Information on Darvocet
Drug Facts:Drug
Facts: Darvocet is a combination of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and propoxyphene
designed to relieve mild to moderate pain. Propoxyphene binds to the pain
receptors in the brain so that the sensation of pain is reduced. Acetaminophen
halts the production of prostaglandins which otherwise cause pain. It is
formulated as a tablet taken every 4 hours by mouth.
Structurally Darvocet is a relative
of the synthetic narcotic, methadone. It's prescribed in two forms-
propoxyphene hydrochloride and propoxyphene napsylate -for relief of mild to
moderate pain. Given Darvocet's similarities to methadone, it's not surprising
that Darvocet is as addictive as it is. Individuals develop an addiction to
Darvocet because it produces feelings of well-being. Once an individual has
developed an addiction to Darvocet they will often get multiple prescriptions
from different doctors to support their addiction. Darvocet activates the
brain's reward systems giving the person an euphoria feeling. The promise of
reward is very intense, causing the individual to crave more Darvocet and to
focus his or her activities around taking the drug. The ability of Darvocet to
strongly activate brain reward mechanisms and its ability to chemically alter
the normal functioning of these systems is what produces an addiction to
Darvocet. Darvocet also reduce a person's level of consciousness, harming the
ability to think or be fully aware of present surroundings.
Propoxyphene comes as a tablet,
capsule, and liquid to take by mouth.
Effects: respiratory
depression and arrest, nausea, confusion, constipation, sedation,
unconsciousness, coma, tolerance, addiction.

physical craving -

Propoxyphene in
high doses, taken by itself or in combination with other drugs, has been
associated with drug-related deaths. Do not take propoxyphene in combination
with other drugs that cause drowsiness: alcohol, tranquilizers, sleep aids,
antidepressant drugs, or antihistamines. Do not take a larger dose, take it
more often, or for a longer period than your doctor tells you
to.
Rehabilitation: Successful rehabilitation includes a calm,
stress free environment, plenty of liquids, and replenishing of vitamins that
have been burned out of the body. Use of a mild sedative to help sleep is often
helpful, as the lack of sleep is what can cause the hallucinations. After
feeling physically better, proper rehabilitation therapy can commence that
deals with relapse prevention, dealing with the reasons the addict turned to
drugs in the first place, and any personal failings that need strengthening. It
is highly recommended that a daily routine of proper exercise, nutrition, and
rest be followed as effective relapse and craving prevention. Ideally a
cleansing program would be also administered to help rid the body of the
residual toxins that can impair health in the future and cause
cravings.Darvocet
